Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on the 18th of July 1994, grew up in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was the daughter of a black man and a white mother. She grew up with her mother's family. Her skin shade made her feel rejected in her youth. They struggled financially. They were constantly moving and had to move 16 times to support her father's work. Despite all this, Russell mentioned how in her early days "there always was a chance for reinvention, to create something new."As an infant, Russell was already artistically at first. she desired to pursue a profession in ballet, and later be a painter. It was when she was 18 that she began her first class in acting. She used her earnings from work to purchase a car and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. She would return to work when her cash was exhausted and would then begin performing. That routine went on for four years, and it took until she landed her first major TV job.
